ILTA 2010 Las Vegas – United We Stand

The theme of this year’s ILTA Conference in Las Vegas beginning next week is “Strategic Unity”. The emphasis is on law firms and corporate law departments getting along by using the same technology. “These disciplines must come together as never before in order to survive and thrive in the future,” states the ILTA Conference Web site. ITLA also promises ed sessions focusing on the Law2020 curriculum which continues over from previous years and will center on improving skills, technologies and leadership. The conference straddles four and a half days and boasts 160 educational sessions. The exhibit hall will host 180 vendors that use this conference as a launching pad for key product releases.

The conference is co-chaired by Maureen Babcock, Manager of Systems Administration at Snell & Wilmer, L.L.P., and Meredith Williams, Director of Knowledge Management at Baker Donelson Bearman Caldwell & Berkowitz.

I got a kick out of the some of the session descriptions, like “Solving Attorneys’ Real Problems, Not the Ones They Think They Have” and “On Cloud Nine or in a Fog? User Tales from the Cloud”. Some very practical courses are offered with the focus on providing value to legal IT staff that can leave this conference and actually apply lessons learned in the field. The faculty is a healthy mix of law firm and corporate law department IT personnel, vendors and IT consultants.

Some of the celebrity sessions appear a little dark and gloomy like Emmy award-winning television news broadcaster and former federal narcotics prosecutor Manny Medrano’s session on conquering fear in the tough times ahead. And Brigadier General Clyde Tate of JAG who will provide insight and experience on the importance of leadership and the skills/traits needed to work in times of massive change. Sounds like some scary times ahead in the legal IT world. Other sessions will help to navigate the eDiscovery product minefield, address data interchange standards (snore) and focus on legal-specific products like Aderant and Autonomy.

One nifty feature of this year’s conference is the ability to download a conference app that will provide you with the conference agenda, educational session details, and member-only access to the list of attendees with the ability to easily message other attendees.

Released at this year’s conference will be the 2010 edition of the InsideLegal/ILTA Member Technology Purchasing Survey (of law firms with 50+ attorneys) as part of ILTA’s annual vendor education program. The full survey PDF will be available for download at the InsideLegal Web site after August 23rd.

Intelliteach’s CEO Lance Waagner is joining forces with Bryan Cave’s User Support leaders to present the ‘Guru’s Guide to Helpdesk and Deskside Support’, an interactive session focused on the legal helpdesk, how to motivate staff for better customer service (“Improve your serve”), call ticketing, first-call closure and more. All session attendees and anyone stopping by the Intelliteach booth (413/415) during ILTA week can claim a copy of the 10 page ‘Guru’s Guide’ which includes invaluable helpdesk metrics, call statistics, and law firm call resolution peer data. The Guru session takes place Thursday, August 26 at 9AM in Ironwood 8.

Here are some of the products/vendors that will be on display at the ILTA Show. Most of these descriptions are verbatim from the vendors and/or public relations reps. Visit the ILTA Conference site for more information.
