LegalTech Celebrates 30 Years – Get Your Tech On

It’s that time of year again – where cold weather and snow descend on New York City along with the annual LegalTech Conference sponsored by American Lawyer Media.  I have attended this show every year for that past seventeen years.  Wow!  But most importantly the show is in its 30th year. That’s quite an achievement and it still remains to be the show for legal vendor product launches.

The first show I attended seventeen years ago was overcrowded with time and billing vendors.  This year, like the last few years, the show will be overrun with eDiscovery vendors.  It is remarkable how fast that particular technology is moving.  We have profiled some key vendors below that will be exhibiting at the show including a couple of practice management solutions to spice it all up. Many thanks to Christy Burke of Burke & Company for helping me out with the vendor profiles.

This year’s show offers a mobile app to assist you with finding sessions and vendors.  That can be found at www.legaltechmobile.com.

Before we get into the conference info, LegalTech NYC is also about the parties, Orlando-based Wave Software, a leading eDiscovery vendor, is co-sponsoring the 4th annual B-Discovery all-chapter event in New York City. The event will benefit the Harwood Center, an early intervention center serving children with developmental disabilities. Last year’s event was the biggest e-Discovery and technology party ever, with almost 1,000 attendees and $10,000 in donations for Harwood Center. The reception is at Touch NYC, one of the top clubs in NYC, on Monday, January 31. The doors will open at 9 PM for an evening of music, drinks and merriment featuring the exciting tracks of DJ Pat Premier. The first 100 people to arrive will get a free CD.  A donation of $10 for charity is requested at the door. B-Discovery expects to surpass the 1,000 attendee mark this year. Register to attend at http://www.partynyc.org.

The conference kicks off with a keynote presentation emphasizing global compliance, not an easy task these days.  The presentation, entitled “Legal vs. IT: Turn the Battle into a Solution to Meet Compliance,” will be delivered by Gabriel Buigas, Vice President and Deputy General Counsel of Hewlett-Packard. He will discuss how, during his tenure as head of Strategy & Operations for HP Legal, they devised and are currently executing a plan to ensure that the appropriate tools, systems and processes are in place to meet the demands of having access to necessary information in real time, working globally, and meeting multiple country regulatory and compliance demands.

The day two keynote features Gonzalo de Cesare, Political Adviser with the European Union Police Mission in Bosnia & Herzegovina, who will be presenting on “United Nations War Crimes Investigations – Information Management in High-Volume Legal Proceedings.” During this presentation, attendees will experience the rare opportunity of hearing the UN’s best practices for effectively and efficiently managing some of the largest and most complicated cases in the world. The day three keynote will feature, Michael Rogers, author and futurist for The New York Times and MSNBC, who will offer an enlightened and engaging discussion on what we can expect the industry to look like in the future.

Business Intelligence Associates, Inc. (LegalTech booth #1301) a leader in e-discovery, will launch TotalDiscovery.com, a revolutionary, web-based, on-demand ESI collection, processing and filtering platform.  Lawyers and litigation support professionals simply go to www.TotalDiscovery.com and within minutes, they can start performing expert, defensible and targeted ESI collections via a secure encrypted connection from anywhere in the world.  Attorneys can now directly collect client data quickly and inexpensively for their review and assessment, while protecting the evidentiary integrity of the ESI for later use in court or with regulators.  TotalDiscovery.com provides unprecedented control over the left side of the EDRM and empowers clients to accurately predict costs of the entire EDRM process at the point of data preservation.

Vancouver-based Themis Solutions Inc. will feature improved two-factor authentication security for its leading cloud-based legal practice management system, Clio (www.goclio.com). Designed to offer attorneys and their clients an even greater level of security and privacy protection, two-factor authentication was developed as part of Clio’s commitment to be the most secure practice management system in the cloud.  Clio’s two-factor authentication option allows subscribers to require that passwords be used in conjunction with a secure PIN delivered to a mobile device or other secondary authentication mechanism. This means enhanced security for all users, and ensures that a weak or compromised password can’t be used alone to gain access to sensitive data.  Themis/Clio will not have a booth at the show but their co-founders, Jack Newton and Rian Gauvreau, will be on-site at the show.

Index Engines (LegalTech booth #2119) features a new cloud-based tape load service that will provide full identification and access to tape data for e-discovery. The “Look & Learn” service, starting at $50 per tape, will provide clients with full access to the index of their tape data without the need to install any hardware or software. Customers will be able to search the index and gather knowledge about content, custodians, email and metadata all via cloud access to the Index Engines interface. Beyond a simple file listing, this access will allow full content query to provide a true picture of what the tapes contain. Index Engines flexible service options include full extraction and query-based extraction.

Informative Graphics Corporation or IGC (LegalTech booth #2401), a leader in viewing, collaboration and redaction technology, will moderate a key “Emerging Technology” panel discussion titled, “The Debate on Native Format Production and Redaction,” at the LegalTech® New York show.  The panel discussion, led by Christine Musil, Director of Marketing for Informative Graphics Corporation, will be held Monday, January 31 from 2:45-3:45pm EST in the Sutton Parlor Center at the New York Hilton and will focus on issues such as the meaning of “native” format and whether “native” redaction truly exists.  The discussion is in response to conflicting interpretations of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP) as to what constitutes native format and obligations organizations have to collect, preserve, review and produce data in the context of litigation.

Additionally, IGC unveils general availability of Brava!® 7 for OpenText eDOCS version 5.2.  Brava for OpenText eDOCS provides improved document collaboration and security capabilities to OpenText eDOCS corporate and law firm customers.  Using Brava, legal customers can compare changes and manage the document review cycle, and redact sensitive information from their documents.

Levit & James, Inc. (LegalTech booth #505) will feature a new version of its Best Authority Table of Authorities (TOA) production software, used by 65 of the 100 largest U.S. law firms.  The new version can now convert Best Authority internal coding to native Microsoft TOA formatting for easy collaboration with co-counsel who only have access to native Word’s TOA features.  Levit & James will demonstrate the Best Authority-to-Word conversion process.  The new version is now available to all Best Authority customers with Software Subscription Service.

Orion Law Management Systems, Inc. will reveal the official release of Orion SFE (Small Firm Edition).  Orion SFE provides smaller law firms with the same dynamic financial and practice management software available to larger law firms, but at a more affordable price.   Smaller firms comprise the majority of today’s law practice market, but they are often the most underserved when it comes to technology.  For this reason, Orion’s SFE is a boon for smaller firms, packing the same powerful punches of Orion’s main system, but at a price within their reach.  For these firms, Orion SFE delivers a fully-integrated, comprehensive front office/back office software system.  Orion does not have a booth at the show but Paul Yelton and Kevin Harris of the company will both be in attendance.

World Software Corporation® (LegalTech booth #328-330) the company behind the award-winning Worldox® Document Management System (DMS) software, will demonstrate its Worldox Productivity Suite, featuring six essential utilities which maximize productivity and including streamlined, affordable workflow.  The new Worldox Productivity Suite provides essential workflow utilities at a price firms can afford.  Also, as an add-on to Worldox® Document Management System, the Productivity Suite integrates seamlessly into Worldox toolbars and menus as well as into document file structure, translating into a minimal learning curve at installation and long-term ease-of-use.

Additionally, Worldox will announce official release of its iPad App for Worldox (www.worldox.com/ipad) which will be free to all Worldox maintenance customers.  The new Worldox iPad App increases accessibility to documents, delivering secure work files anytime, anywhere.  The Worldox iPad App provides remote desktop connectivity with Worldox including essential DMS features.

Trial Solutions (LegalTech booth #1416) , an e-discovery software company, introduces SelfLoader, a software utility developed to assist clients in loading their own documents and data to OnDemand®, Trial Solutions’ online document review repository (previously called ImageDepot.)  OnDemand users can now load documents and data into OnDemand databases at their own convenience and at no extra charge – no more load fees.  SelfLoader is much faster because clients circumvent the typical two-day processing time required by most software companies to load new data.  With Trial Solutions’ SelfLoader, clients enjoy same-day processing so that their data is available for review the very next day.  SelfLoader is also equipped with a wizard that walks the client through the loading process with ease.

Mattern & Associates’ President Rob Mattern will be on-site with the results of the Mattern Cost Recovery Survey.  The company, an unbiased support services consultant to law firms, conducts the survey every other year.  This year’s results benchmark how law firms of all sizes are approaching cost recovery for various services within the firm.

DocSolid® announced the release of Airmail2® Enterprise Scan Capture for Law Firms. The cloud-based solution works with all makes and models of MFPs, digital copiers and scanners, with one-button simplicity. It enables easy and secure scanning to create and deliver OCR’d PDF files to a user’s inbox or a network folder or to capture images for document management systems like Autonomy® iManage® and Worldox®.

Exterro, Inc., the leading provider of legal governance, risk and compliance management software solutions, and Digital Reef, a leading software provider of scalable and open software for eDiscovery and file governance, announced the seamless integration of Exterro Fusion and Digital Reef eDiscovery. The combination substantially reduces the cost of legal holds, data preservation, processing and early case assessments (ECA) in electronic discovery. A demonstration of the joint solution will be available at LegalTech New York at Exterro Booth No. 513-515 and at Digital Reef Booth No. 1404.

See you there!
