LegalTech NYC 2015 – It’s all about Security and Governance

We’re gearing up for next week’s LegalTech Show in New York City at the Midtown Hilton. Hopefully the East Coast will be shoveled out by then to guarantee a successful turn-out. I’m looking forward to seeing many of you there!

Cyber security and governance are the dominating subjects at this year’s LegalTech with the thought of taking a more pro-active approach to practice and advice given to clients by law firms. Cyber security issues hit Sony hard and are a good example of how one corporation can be quickly sabotaged and put into a tail spin by a major cyber security breach. What better way to avoid costly eDiscovery that to be prepared for it as a possibility in your company and therefore establish information governance.  Other educational sessions will cover the evolution of the lawyer’s role.  A full schedule of educational sessions can be found here.

In conjunction with the show, LegalTech will also be holding the Law Firm Chief Information & Technology Officers Forum. Among the presenters/sponsors is Tikit North America  with a CIO-focused panel session of interest.  Tikit executives and law firm thought leaders will be leading a panel discussion focused on the relevance of user interaction (UI) and user experience (UX) a part of modern legal technology and application development.  As CIOs and CTOs begin to consider building their own apps, this session, “Engaging Human-Computer Interaction & Ergonomics Experts to Boost User Experience and Profitability”, will provide a behind the scenes look at how Tikit took timekeeping, an area that has challenged the legal industry for decades, and went about developing a technological solution based on the user experience.  While Tikit executives Mark Garnish and Peter Zver have been delivering legal applications for 20 years, this challenge was undertaken with the aid of a new approach: developing a user experience strategy and executing it with the help of Human-Computer Interaction & Ergonomics experts.  Join Tikit’s Mark Garnish and Peter Zver, Keesal, Young & Logan CIO Justin Hectus and Jeffrey Brandt, PinHawk editor and owner of Brandt Professional Services, for this in-depth panel into the team’s endeavor to consumerize technology for the business benefit for law firms.

Here’s some highlights of the exhibitors that will be included in the show:

Catalyst Repository Systems

Booth #1411

Catalyst designs, hosts and services the world’s fastest and most powerful document repositories for large-scale discovery and regulatory compliance. The company continues to be in the forefront of educating the legal industry on Technology Assisted Review (TAR) and Continuous Active Learning (CAL) and will continue sharing this information at LegalTech NY 2015. Predictive Coding, TAR and CAL have been the hot-button issues in the legal technology space over the past year and the technology is developing and advancing daily. Let me know if you would be interested in speaking to Catalyst about the various ways in which you can tackle the burden of document review. TAR is one and not all TAR tools are the same.  CAL is one type of TAR protocol that gets you results faster and Catalyst is the only company to offer a CAL protocol in a review platform that can handle massive document collections, saving time and dramatically reducing overall discovery costs. Catalyst will also be discussing recent updates to its predictive ranking engine, Insight Predict, and presenting a session, “Taking TAR to the Next Level: Recent Research and the Promise of Continuous Active Learning”.

Dave Deppe (President of UnitedLex) will be discussing TAR including advanced methodologies created by UnitedLex in partnership with their clients. These advanced cost saving methodologies can be used in conjunction or exclusive of predictive coding to achieve the same or better results at half the time or cost of predictive coding.  At LTNY, UnitedLex will also be highlighting their suite of cyber risk management solutions based on the need for a converged approach to cyber risk management involving key Legal and Business stakeholders in addition to IT that will result in a dramatic improvement in a company’s overall risk posture. In light of the seemingly endless string of “mega-breaches,” companies have acknowledged that cybersecurity is more than an IT issue.  However, few have taken affirmative steps to truly change their approach to protecting sensitive information and securing their infrastructure.  In this new age of cyber risk, organizations are struggling to translate enhanced awareness into improved security and incident readiness, and a new approach is needed.
